Orla Kiely AW13 Header

London Fashion Week has rolled around again and the presentation we always look forward to the most is fromย Orla Kiely. Last season Orla hopped over to New York, but we were delighted to find out she was back in London to show her AW13 collection. Housed in the Elms Lester Gallery, we hiked up some abnormally steep stairs to be greeted by Orla’s whimsical dreamlike world.

The sound of a bustling office and the tap of typewriter keys set the mood, whilst each model donned a messy Bardot inspired beehive and dark 60s eyes as they busied themselves away in the most stylish typewriter pool youโ€™ve ever seen. We’ve already given a rave review before even mentioning the clothes so letโ€™s go back to the beginning.

Any collection that cites seventies flocked wallpaper, Margot Tennebaum and Breon O’Casey as the main inspiration behind it is going to tick all the right boxes at Betty. Peter Pan collars and angora sweaters tucked into high waisted skirts gave the collection a 60s feel, whilst velvet jacquard suits with roll necks underneath nodded through to the early 70s. As it goes we’re happy with one foot in each decade.

Orla then did what Orla does best, kitsch looking boucle suits, to die for coats and party dresses that have been sketched straight from our dreams. Statement knits with woodland creatures offset the clean lines of 60s shifts, all topped with thick beaver-esque faux fur coats and a high denier cream tight. Pops of mustard, candy pink, postbox red sat against cream, navy and earthy camels. We now yearn to be sent on a secretary course to learn our very best shorthand. Thank you Orla for another wonderful presentation!
